“This summer definitely has been hard,” says Maria Rodriquez of Compton, California. “We’ve run out of food a couple of days and have been low on food a lot. There have been days where we did not have anything to eat.
“It’s difficult, especially when you have small kids. I tell them, ‘Just think about it this way: You have to leave some for your brothers and sisters. You have to think about them.’ And they do pull back.
“But they’re still hungry – the four of them,” the 39-year-old mother reports, brushing back tears. “So at times my husband and I will say it’s okay if we don’t eat for today, or we just eat like once that day. But food is our priority.”
