Growing in Faith

This News Note is available in packets of 100 and packets of 1000.

AITH IS OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S CALL. As He pours His love upon each of us, we respond like flowers turning to follow the sun. We long for a better relation ship with God, the ability to feel closer to Him every day, and, above all, a deeper love. Like explorers venturing into unknown seas, we should set out with interest and excitement on this voyage of discovery. We seek God and He is never without surprise, exhilaration, wonder, and love for the seeker.

This doesn’t mean there may not be suffering and possibly even pain along the way. Jesus showed us that there is a mysterious mingling of joy and sacrifice when seeking and serving God. The reward, however, is well worth the journey as we fall more deeply in love with God who sets our hearts aflame and transforms us in ways we would never imagine.

A Road Map for the Journey
A father desperate to help his son, who suffered a lifelong possession by an unclean spirit, went to Jesus and said, “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you can! Everything is possible to one who has faith.” Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”

The boy’s father echoes every believer who struggles with imperfect faith. The path to spiritual maturity takes us on a long and sometimes difficult journey.

Faith is one of the easiest things to ignore because God quietly whispers. He is not right in front of us demanding attention in the way of jobs, family, friends, and even hobbies. Or maybe the prayer and reading that used to be so effective aren’t working for us anymore. We know we’re missing something but are not sure what to do for that “next step.” In his biography Pope Benedict XVI: An Intimate Portrait, author Peter Seewald questioned the Holy Father about this very topic. He writes, “I had asked how many paths there were leading to God.

I really did not know what he would say and had been inclined to suppose that he would use some sort of formula. The answer came back like a pistol shot. There were as many ways to God, he said, as there were people; since ultimately, each person had his own path.” God knows each of us better than we know ourselves and will uniquely tailor our path to greater faith. There are a few tried and true steps, however, that we all can take in our journey.
