As spring draws to a close and we prepare for summer, The Christophers pray that families and friends who have been kept distant from each other over the past year can once again gather to renew vital connections that sustain the human spirit.
June 22nd is the Feast Day of Saint Thomas More, the patron of attorneys, statesmen, and politicians. More once said, “The ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest.” What an insightful statement, demonstrating the importance this saint of statesmanship attributed to family life. It is within families that we cultivate the virtues that enable us to become leaders in society. So we might pray for the intercession of Thomas More this June 22nd to strengthen and renew bonds within families in order to inspire new leaders to build a more just and merciful society.
The Christophers’ latest News Note Live the Golden Rule provides a wonderful reflection on the commitment to decency that is necessary to cultivate a just and merciful society. “When you put the Golden Rule into practice,” this News Note states, “you not only make this a happier world by contributing to the good order of society, but you become a more attractive person yourself. People respond warmly to politeness, civility, and human warmth.”
One particularly poignant story in our Live the Golden Rule News Note tells of Elizabeth Cody Newenhuyse, who described in Today’s Christian Woman her reaction to a young woman she calls “shabbily dressed.” Newenhuyse was in her yard gardening when this woman walked by her house. Fighting against her “old negative habit of judging people by external appearances,” Newenhuyse said hello and the woman gave her “a beautiful smile in return.” Newenhuyse writes, “When you’re tempted to think or act critically, stop and consciously substitute a positive response. Pay a compliment. It may seem artificial at first, but after a while, it will become a habit, and a God-honoring habit at that.”
This is just one of several beautiful stories exemplifying the power of kindness in Live the Golden Rule, which is a News Note that provides a timely reflection on human interaction as we slowly get back to normal relations within society.
We hope everyone has a wonderful start to their summer, staying safe and healthy while enjoying the company of loved ones. Thanks to our donors for making all we do possible. God bless!
